Starforce boycott, Round 3

Looks like Ubisoft has decided to avoid the whole Starforce tangle -- Heroes of Might and Magic V will use an alternative protection scheme. Way to go Ubi! Here's hoping other companies will follow suit and put Starforce out of business.

See the galaxy...

Every morning, I make it a point to swing by Howard Tayler's Schlock Mercenary for my daily sci-fi fix. This webcomic is not only frequently updated, but is smart, funny, and engaging. A very 'grown-up' story, it never takes itself too seriously, and is always a thrill to read. When it comes to my favorite leisure web-reading, Schlock Mercenary and Sluggy Freelance are tied right up there at the top.

And now, one of my dreams has come true. 'Under New Management', the first Schlock Mercenary book, is available for pre-order. I just ordered mine.

If you aren't familiar with Schlock, go to Basic Training and start reading. You can thank me later. Or better yet, support a great artist and buy a copy of his book for yourself.

Worst video game covers

It may be in Portuguese, but you can still enjoy the pictures. Or mock them. Whichever.

Home of the Underdogs seems to be under the weather

Okay, so I'm a little slow on the uptake here, but in my own defense, I don't visit Home of the Underdogs terribly often. It's a wonderful reference for older PC games, and is invaluable when it comes to finding old, out-of-print titles from years gone by. Unfortunately, right now they seem to be having problems with their domain registration (see the Wikipedia article here). In the meantime, you should be able to reach them at their IP address, http://209.120.136.195/ -- if you actually want to download anything, read through the Wiki article and follow their link to the appropriate discussion.

Here's to a quick recovery. Get well soon, HOTU!

Vintagecomputing.com

I just ran across Redwolf's site Vintagecomputing.com, which has some very cool articles on older computers and games. Make sure you take a look at 'How to Tell if You Have a Video Game Collecting Problem'. (Note to my wife: See how bad it could be? :) )
